Always remember that any child with a disability or special needs, is a child first of all. Any condition they may have should always come second.

Pre-5 service: S.E.N.
Information for parents

They are a team of teachers trained and experienced in working with children in the early years. The LEA employs them and the Pre-5 Service is part of the Educational Psychology Service.

They have close links with health professionals and other advisory teachers and the EYDCP. They have a range of roles but are all concerned with children with some developmental difficulty during their early years

They provide information to the local education authority, special educational needs group when there has been a request for a statutory assessment of the special needs of the pre-school child. This helps SENG to decide whether the child’s difficulties are severe enough to go ahead with an assessment.

They visit families to explain the statutory assessment procedures when the LEA has made a decision to go ahead

They visit foundation stage settings where there is a child with a statement of special educational needs to offer advice, support and suitable resources to staff in meeting the child’s special educational needs.
