Always remember that any child with a disability or special needs, is a child first of all. Any condition they may have should always come second.

LEEDS LIBRARY SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Leeds Library and Information Services provides a range of transcription services for blind and partially sighted people through Braille and Large
Print Services.
Documents such as reports, agenda, minutes, articles, instruction leaflets and personal documents can be transcribed into Braille, large print or onto audiocassette.

This is done using computer based transcription systems, OCR scanners and a dedicated document reading machine. Audiotapes are produced using 'human voice' i.e. trained readers working with both analogue and digital recording equipment. It is however, possible to use high quality electronic synthesized speech if required.

Documents for transcription can be submitted in either electronic format on computer disc or via e-mail or in print.

Services

Braille

It is possible to produce documents in grade one or grade two Braille. Generally grade two is the more common form used by Braille readers.
Grade one is mainly used when learning Braille.

Large Print

Documents can be reprinted in clear bold print in either of two sizes:
Audio Cassette
Most print documents can be read onto audiotape by either a male or female reader. Documents can be produced on C15, C30, C60 or C90 tapes with tone indexing for people who can use this facility.

Access

The Centre is fully accessible with a talking lift to all floors and a unisex accessible toilet on each floor.
There is a large visitor car park with two spaces reserved for orange/blue badge holders directly outside the main entrance.
Pedestrian access is from Headingley Lane via a long, uphill drive with no footpath at either side. There are four flights of steps to reach the main
Entrance.

Housebound Library Service

We provide home delivery service customers who, because of illness or infirmity, are unable to travel to their local branch or mobile library and have no one who is able to on their behalf. The books are chosen for them at H.Q. by the housebound librarian according to profiles drawn up in discussion with them. These are delivered every two weeks. This service is available to anyone of any age not just the elderly.

Residential Homes

We have many more requests for our services than we are able to cope with. To help us spread limited resources more widely we also loan a collection of 50 or 100 books changed by request to about 100 residential homes where there are a number of people who qualify for the housebound services.
