. LEEDS LIBRARY SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Leeds Library and Information Services provides a range of transcription
services for blind and partially sighted people through Braille and Large
This is done using computer based transcription systems, OCR scanners and a dedicated document reading machine. Audiotapes are produced using 'human voice' i.e. trained readers working with both analogue and digital recording equipment. It is however, possible to use high quality electronic synthesized speech if required. Documents for transcription can be submitted in either electronic format on computer disc or via e-mail or in print. Services Braille It is possible to produce documents in grade one or grade two Braille.
Generally grade two is the more common form used by Braille readers. Large Print Documents can be reprinted in clear bold print in either of two sizes: Access The Centre is fully accessible with a talking lift to all floors and
a unisex accessible toilet on each floor.
· Large Print Books A selection of large print books, mainly novels, is available in Central Lending Library and at every branch and mobile library. · Magnifying glass Each library has a magnifying glass for use within the library. · Books On Cassette The Books on Cassette service is free to anyone living in Leeds who is
visually or print disabled. You can choose either to have your books delivered
by post or to collect them from your local library. Location The unit is based at:
Barnsley Library gives a service that is no more than one mile from anyone's
home. This is achieved by 2 mobile libraries, a housebound readers van
and collections delivered to centres and homes. Large Mobile A purpose built vehicle complete with access for wheelchairs. It holds
approximately 3000 books including children's plus a collection of talking
books. It operates on a fortnightly rota visiting mainly West Barnsley
one week and East Barnsley the second. It also visits several schools,
which are more than a mile from a static library. Small Mobile A purpose built vehicle with low access. It holds about 2000 books including
children's and also has a collection of Large Print books and talking
books for visually impaired users Housebound Library Service We provide home delivery service customers who, because of illness or infirmity, are unable to travel to their local branch or mobile library and have no one who is able to on their behalf. The books are chosen for them at H.Q. by the housebound librarian according to profiles drawn up in discussion with them. These are delivered every two weeks. This service is available to anyone of any age not just the elderly. Residential Homes We have many more requests for our services than we are able to cope
with. To help us spread limited resources more widely we also loan a collection
of 50 or 100 books changed by request to about 100 residential homes where
there are a number of people who qualify for the housebound services.
