The unit helps children with a disability and their families with advice and practical help. It also offers support and advice to children in hospital and to parents who are thinking of adoption for their newborn babies. The unit sometimes helps with worries and concerns over the care of a disabled child. What kinds of disability does the unit cover? All kinds of disability such as difficulty with walking, moving about, seeing or hearing, communicating with people, learning and ill health. The team works with children who have a permanent disability, which is likely to require special help from Social Services. What sort of help do they give? Social work advice, assessments and sorting out family problems. You can apply by phoning the Children with a Disability Unit. One of our social workers will then visit you to carry out an assessment of your needs What is an assessment? A social worker will discuss your circumstances with you and then recommend the help that best suits your needs. Are there other ways I can apply? You can apply for special equipment and adaptations to your home through your doctor or hospital occupational therapist.
