Always remember that any child with a disability or special needs, is a child first of all. Any condition they may have should always come second.

The Home Based Break Service

This service provides support in your home to help you to care for
Your disabled child so you can have a break.

How does it work?

A care worker will come into your home to care for your child or if you and your child wish, they may take them out so that you can have a break at home.
How do I get the service?

You will need to contact your local children and families team (numbers below) who will send a social worker to assess you and your child’s needs. Other professional may be contacted for further information.
If you give your permission. This is to help the social worker decide how best to help you and your child.

If the assessment recommends The Home Based Break Service the social worker will present a report to a panel, which meets monthly to look at applications for the service. You will be invited to attend if you wish.

My child has very special needs will the carers be able to manage?

Through assessment will identify your child’s needs which will be passed on to the care workers to ensure they have the skills to care for your child.

Who are the carers?

There are a number of local agencies providing Home Based Break contract to the local authority. They also employ their own staff.
